Quick answer: Crates Health helps you use your HSA or FSA on wellness expenses such as gym memberships, fitness trackers, supplements, and more. You pick products, answer a short health assessment, and get a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from our medical team. You buy with a personal card, then request reimbursement. For most people, using pre-tax dollars saves 25-40%.
How Crates Works (4 Steps)
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Start at https://app.crateshealth.com/onboarding/welcome. The heading is Let's unlock your savings. The button is Choose my products.
You pick products first, on Choose your products. Then you create an account and answer the health questions. That part takes about 2-3 minutes. The questions cover family history, conditions you want to prevent, and conditions you want to manage or reverse.
You then see whether we can write letters from those answers. Checking your eligibility lasts 3 seconds (it is skipped if your device asks for reduced motion). That pause is not a clinician, and it does not issue a letter.
If you are eligible, the screen shows your name and you're eligible, plus a letter count or a savings figure. It does not say a letter has been issued. If we can't write letters from these answers, your products stay saved. You can edit them and choose Recheck eligibility. That screen does not show plans.
Step 2: Get Your Medical Documentation
Our licensed healthcare providers review your health profile and issue your Letters of Medical Necessity (LMNs). Each product needs its own letter. You need a letter left on your plan, an administrator chosen, and current health answers.
Many LMNs for catalog products are issued within minutes: custom or non-catalog requests typically take 24-48 hours. No doctor visits. No waiting weeks. No co-pays.
A confirmed catalog product shows Letter issues right away. A custom product, or anything the app has not confirmed, shows Further review required. The app does not promise an instant letter when it has no preview.
Step 3: Shop and Pay Like Normal
Buy from wherever you normally would: Amazon, your local gym, your favorite brands. Use your regular credit card. Nothing changes about how you shop. You do not buy the product through Crates. Crates is not a store.
Most merchants do not take HSA cards. You pay with a personal card and then get reimbursed.
Step 4: Get Reimbursed
Open Letters and reimbursements and switch to Receipts and reimbursements (on a phone, Receipts). Add a receipt for the product. When you are ready, it shows Continue reimbursement.
Crates fills and sends the claim for Bank of America, Fidelity, FSAFEDS (FSA only), HealthEquity, HSA Bank, Navia, Optum, and WEX, when the account type matches. For supported admins, our in-house claims team handles submitting documentation. For any other administrator, download the letter and the receipt and submit them yourself.
The administrator decides the payout and timing. The money does not come from Crates.
What You'll Need
An HSA or FSA account. If you're not sure which you have (or if you have one), check with your employer's benefits department. Here's how HSAs and FSAs differ.
A wellness expense you want to cover. Gym memberships, fitness trackers, supplements, recovery tools, sleep tech. Check out what's eligible.
About 3 minutes for the health assessment.
You do not pick an HSA or FSA administrator during sign-up. The app asks Where is your health account held? the first time you get a letter, or under Profile, HSA or FSA.
What You Don't Need
A doctor's appointment
A referral
Your HSA/FSA card at the store. Most merchants do not take HSA cards. Paying the Crates fee is a separate question: Can I Pay for Crates Health with My HSA/FSA?

How Much Can I Save?
When you use pre-tax HSA/FSA dollars instead of after-tax income, you save your marginal tax rate. For most people, that's 25-40%.
Plan | Annual cost | Average savings on the card |
Beginner Saver | $39 a year | $513 a year |
Pro Saver | $89 a year | $949 a year |
Ultimate Saver | $99 a year | $1,487 a year |
The $513, $949, and $1,487 figures are published averages on the plan cards, not your own estimate.
During sign-up, one saved product can be Subscribe and Save at $35 a year, or a one-time purchase of $39. A one-time purchase covers one letter and lasts 12 months from the purchase date. After that your account stays free, with everything you've saved.
The savings figure during sign-up is 30% of modeled spend. It is a modeled tax benefit, not a balance or a reimbursement. A monthly cost counts as twelve months. A one-time cost counts once. Actual savings depend on your tax rate and what you spend.
If you don't save more than the cost of your subscription within 30 days of purchase, we'll give you a full refund — no questions asked.
Not ready to pay? The plan cards say Letters are not included with free access. The button is Continue free. That plan is Intro Saver, status Free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be sick or have a diagnosis? No. Prevention counts. If you have risk factors for conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or hypertension - or even family history of these conditions - many wellness products can qualify. The health assessment helps identify what applies to you.
How long does the whole process take? Health assessment: about 3 minutes. LMN delivery: many catalog products are issued in minutes, custom requests typically 24-48 hours. Reimbursement: varies by your HSA/FSA admin, but typically 3-10 business days after you submit.
Is this legitimate? Is it legal? Yes. Letters of Medical Necessity are an established mechanism under IRS rules (Publication 502) for qualifying wellness products as medical expenses. Our LMNs are issued by licensed healthcare providers and follow all IRS requirements.
What if my claim gets denied? It happens sometimes, usually because the HSA/FSA admin needs more documentation. Our in-house claims team helps you through the appeal process. Here's our guide on handling denials.
Can I use Crates for my family? Yes! You can get LMNs for your spouse and dependent children and reimburse from your HSA/FSA. Here's how family coverage works.
What makes Crates different from other HSA/FSA services? Crates can issue LMNs for virtually any wellness product — you're not limited to a preset catalog. You shop wherever you normally would, pay with your regular card, and we handle the medical documentation and reimbursement. Plus, Crates stores your LMNs and receipts in one place, so you're always prepared in case the IRS audits you. You can add a product that is not on the list. Crates can fill and send the claim for the administrators named above. Letters and receipts sit together on Letters and reimbursements. You can store a receipt with a paid plan, or while an issued letter is still unexpired.
Ready to Start?
Head to https://app.crateshealth.com/onboarding/welcome. It takes about 3 minutes. If we can write letters from your answers, you will see you're eligible. That is not a letter yet. If we can't, you will see we can't write letters from these answers.
On a computer, the green rail has Home, Letters and reimbursements, Discover, Profile, and the plan button. On a phone, Home, Letters, Discover, and Profile are the bottom tabs, and the plan name is in a pill.
