Using Crates for Your Family (Spouse and Dependents)

Quick answer: Yes, your HSA or FSA funds can be used for qualified medical expenses for your spouse and tax dependents. With Crates, each family member needs their own individual account with their own health profile, but multiple Crates accounts can be tied to the same HSA or FSA account.

Using Your HSA/FSA for Family Members

HSA

If you have an HSA, you can use it to pay for qualified medical expenses for: - Yourself - Your spouse - Your dependent children (anyone you can claim as a dependent on your taxes)

This applies even if your spouse or dependents aren't covered by your health plan. The HSA funds can reimburse their eligible expenses as long as the person is your spouse or tax dependent. There is no time limit on HSA reimbursements - expenses are reimbursable from the date of account establishment through any point in the future.

FSA

FSA rules are similar. You can use your FSA for qualified medical expenses for: - Yourself - Your spouse - Your dependents

Keep in mind that FSA reimbursements must be submitted within your plan year. Check with your FSA admin about their specific deadlines.

How to Use Crates for Family Members

Because Crates issues personalized Letters of Medical Necessity based on each individual's health profile, each family member needs their own Crates account. Here's how it works:

One Crates account = one person = one health profile = personalized LMNs

Each family member: 1. Signs up for their own Crates account 2. Completes their own health survey based on their personal health conditions 3. Receives their own personalized Letters of Medical Necessity

The key: multiple Crates accounts can all be tied to the same HSA or FSA account. So the account holder's HSA/FSA information is used for reimbursement, regardless of which family member's Crates account the LMN was issued under.

Example: A Family of Three

  • Mom has the family HSA account

  • Mom signs up for Crates → completes her health profile → gets LMNs for her gym membership and supplements → ties her Crates account to her HSA

  • Dad signs up for his own Crates account → completes his health profile → gets an LMN for his fitness tracker → ties his Crates account to Mom's HSA

  • Daughter signs up for her own Crates account → completes her health profile → gets an LMN for her yoga studio membership → ties her Crates account to Mom's HSA

All three family members have individualized LMNs based on their own health needs, and all three are reimbursed through the same HSA account.

Common Scenarios

"I want to get my daughter a fitness tracker with my HSA"

  1. Your daughter signs up for her own Crates account

  2. She completes the health survey with her health information

  3. She gets an LMN issued in her name for the fitness tracker

  4. Purchase the tracker

  5. Her Crates account is tied to your HSA for reimbursement

"My spouse wants to use my FSA for a gym membership"

  1. Your spouse signs up for their own Crates account

  2. They complete the health survey with their health information

  3. They get an LMN issued in their name for the gym membership

  4. Your spouse signs up for the gym and pays

  5. Their Crates account is tied to your FSA for reimbursement

"Can my adult child use my HSA?"

Only if they're still your tax dependent. Adult children who are no longer claimed on your taxes are not eligible for reimbursement from your HSA/FSA. They would need their own HSA or FSA account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my spouse need their own Crates account? Yes. Each person needs their own Crates account with their own health profile to issue their own personalized Letters of Medical Necessity. However, multiple Crates accounts can be tied to the same HSA or FSA account for reimbursement.

Can both my spouse and I have separate Crates accounts tied to the same HSA? Yes. Each of you would have your own Crates account with your own health profile and your own LMNs, but both accounts can be tied to the same HSA for reimbursement.

What if my spouse has their own FSA at work? Each person can use their own FSA for their own expenses. You can also use your FSA for your spouse's expenses, but be careful not to "double dip" - the same expense can't be reimbursed from both accounts.

Can I get an LMN for my baby or young child? It depends on the product and the health need. Some products (like air purifiers for a child with asthma) absolutely qualify. Your child would need their own Crates account, and the health assessment will help determine eligibility based on their health profile.

Is there a limit on how many family members I can cover? No. Each family member signs up for their own Crates account, and there's no limit on how many accounts can be tied to the same HSA or FSA. With the Unlimited plan, each person can get as many LMNs as they need.

Will Crates support family plans in the future? We're actively working on building family plans so everything can be managed from a single place. For now, individual accounts per family member is the way to go.
