Quick Answer: No — Crates is not a store and you cannot purchase products through Crates. Buy your products wherever you normally would (gym, Amazon, brand website) using your regular credit or debit card. Then upload your itemized receipt to your Crates dashboard and submit for reimbursement.

Great question - and this trips up a lot of people. Here's why:

Most wellness retailers (gyms, supplement brands, Amazon, etc.) are not set up to accept HSA/FSA cards at checkout. This is because of something called Merchant Category Codes (MCCs).

Every business has an MCC that tells the card network what type of business it is. HSA/FSA cards are programmed to only work at merchants coded as medical providers (pharmacies, doctor offices, etc.). Your gym is coded as a "fitness facility," not a medical provider - so the card gets declined.

This doesn't mean the purchase isn't eligible. It just means you need to pay with a regular card and get reimbursed afterward.

Using your personal card and submitting for reimbursement is actually the standard way to handle wellness HSA/FSA purchases. Even if your card worked at a retailer, many financial advisors recommend the reimbursement path anyway because:

In rare cases, your HSA/FSA card may work at a wellness retailer - particularly those who've set up IIAS (Inventory Information Approval System) integration. If it does, that's fine! Just make sure you still have your LMN on file for your records.

However, for most wellness purchases through Crates, the pay-then-reimburse path is the way to go.
