Can I Use Both an HSA and FSA?

Quick Answer: Generally no - you can't have a standard HSA and a general-purpose FSA at the same time. But there are important exceptions: you CAN pair an HSA with a Limited-Purpose FSA (dental/vision only) or a Dependent Care FSA.

The General Rule

If you have an HSA, you cannot also have a general-purpose Healthcare FSA. The IRS considers a general FSA to be "other health coverage" that disqualifies you from contributing to an HSA.

This applies even if it's your spouse's FSA - if your spouse has a general-purpose FSA that could cover your expenses, you may not be eligible to contribute to an HSA.

The Exceptions

✅ HSA + Limited-Purpose FSA (LPFSA)

A Limited-Purpose FSA only covers dental and vision expenses. Because it doesn't cover general medical expenses, it doesn't conflict with HSA eligibility.

This combo lets you: - Use your HSA for medical expenses and wellness products - Use the LPFSA specifically for dental and vision costs - Maximize your pre-tax savings across both accounts

✅ HSA + Dependent Care FSA (DCFSA)

A Dependent Care FSA covers childcare expenses (daycare, after-school programs, etc.) - not medical expenses. Since it's an entirely different category, it's fully compatible with an HSA.

✅ HSA + Post-Deductible FSA

Some employers offer a "post-deductible" FSA that only kicks in after you meet your health plan deductible. Before the deductible is met, it functions like a Limited-Purpose FSA (dental/vision only).

What This Means for Crates

Crates Health works with your HSA or your general-purpose FSA - whichever you have. If you have an LPFSA, note that it only covers dental and vision, so wellness products would need to be reimbursed through your HSA.
